Nevada considers cost of mail-in ballot

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Nevada election officials say hosting a mail only special election to fill a vacant U.S. House seat would cost more than allowing voters to cast ballots at polling places as usual.

The Las Vegas Sun reported that allowing voters to cast ballots only by mail would cost more than $360,000 in Washoe and Clark Counties alone. But those counties could save more than $30,000 by holding a traditional vote instead.

What's driving the cost difference is that the ballots would need to be mailed first class.

Secretary of State Ross Miller had asked county officials to project the costs for the Sept. 13 election.

So far, 11 of the state's 17 counties have responded to Miller's inquiry and none have said it would be cheaper to cast mail ballots.
