PREPS: Carson softball squad triumphs

RENO - Carson High rolled to an early 7-2 lead and then had to hold off a late rally by North Valleys to win 14-9 in a Northern 4A crossover softball game Thursday afternoon.

Carson is 4-2 overall and 1-0 in 4A play entering its home doubleheader on Saturday against Galena at 10 a.m.

"It's a nice start," Carson coach Scott Vickrey said. "We've got two tough games coming up against Galena and then one against Spanish Springs. Defensively we're playing pretty sound softball, and we're hitting all through the lineup."

Christa McGahuey went 3-for-4 with five RBIs and Emily Collins went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Moriah Lane had two hits and two RBI, while Lauren Knorzer and Lou Ashbaugh also had two hits. Jennifer Purcell and Lisa Yamamoto added a hit each.

Carson took a 3-0 lead in the first when McGahuey's infield out scored Collins, who had singled. After a walk to Knorzer, Purcell drove in two with a double.

After North Valleys cut the lead to 3-2 with two in the third, Carson scored four times in the fourth to make it 7-2.

Yamamoto, Ashbaugh and Collins had singles while Lane and McGahuey added doubles.

The Panthers scored one in the fifth to make it 7-3, and the Senators scored three times in the top of the sixth to make it 10-3, as McGahuey and Knorzer had run-scoring hits.

North Valleys struck for six runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 10-9 before Carson scored four times in the seventh, as McGahuey doubled home two of the runs.


JV SOFTBALL

CARSON MAULS NV

RENO - Carson's JV team improved its record to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in league with a 16-2 win over North Valleys.

Becka Breuer, Maddi Von Duering and Erica Watson combined to throw a no-hitter. Carson was led by Breuer, who went 3-3 with a triple, Malia Tiffer went 2-for-2 and Von Duering 2-for-4.

Carson had a total of 12 hits.


VARSITY BASEBALL

YERINGTON TOPS FERNLEY

YERINGTON - The Lions scored eight runs in the first two innings en route to an 11-5 win over the Vaqueros.

Cole Aiazzi, Jarrod Adams, Curtis Stubblefield and Corbin Cliften all had two hits for the Lions.

Aiazzi and Adams each drove in two runs.
