A's win, Giants lose in exhibition play

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Tyson Ross had another stellar outing, Kurt Suzuki and David DeJesus each had three RBIs and the Oakland Athletics beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 15-7 Thursday.

Ross, in the running for the No. 5 spot in the rotation, gave up one run on four hits in 5 2-3 innings. It was the first run the 6-foot-6 right-hander has allowed in 15 1-3 innings this spring.

Kevin Kouzmanoff hit a solo home run and added an RBI single for Oakland.

Also, Trevor Cahill has been named opening day starter for the Oakland Athletics.

The Athletics made the announcement Thursday.

Cahill went 18-8 with a 2.97 ERA in 30 starts last season and was selected for his first All-Star team. He had 118 strikeouts and 63 walks in 196.2 innings.

Entering his third season in the majors, Cahill has a 5.29 ERA in five games this spring.

Oakland opens April 1 at home against Seattle.

INDIANS 7, GIANTS 1

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Chad Huffman hit a three-run homer and an RBI double, Luke Carlin added a solo homer and the Cleveland Indians cruised to a 7-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Thursday night.

Left-hander David Huff, making a late bid to earn the final spot in Cleveland's rotation, pitched five shutout innings, giving up three hits, walking one and striking out two.

The Indians scored three runs - only one earned - in the third inning off Barry Zito. Carlin hit a two-out homer off the left-hander in the sixth.
