TWIN FALLS, Idaho - Western Nevada College remained perfect in the Scenic West Athletic Conference with a doubleheader sweep of College of Southern Idaho Saturday afternoon.
WNC won the opener 6-4 and took the nightcap 4-2. The two wins move WNC to 16-0 in league and 23-9 overall. WNC's 16-game win streak is the longest in program history. The previous best was 12 games.
The Wildcats, who lead the SWAC, visit second-place Salt Lake next Friday and Saturday for a four-game series. Salt Lake was ranked as high as No. 3 in the country at one point this year.
WNC wiped out a 1-0 deficit in the opener and a 2-0 deficit in the second game.
"I have to compliment my team," WNC coach D.J. Whittemore said. "They don't panic when they get behind. They just keep grinding. They play hard every pitch and every inning."
In the opener, WNC tied the game at 1 in the third and went ahead for good in the fourth by scoring three runs to grab a 4-1 lead. Pat McMeel hit a two-run single and Tanner Nielsen squeezed home a run. WNC added two more in the fifth.
McMeel and Beau Day each finished with two hits.
Chris Garrison picked up the win with 1.1 innings of relief. The save went to Kody Gorden, who pitched the last 2.1 innings.
In the second game, WNC trailed 2-0 early but tied the game at 2 in the fifth on Day's pinch-hit triple. Day added an RBI single in the seventh to finish 2-for-2 with three RBIs.
Matt Robertson picked up the win in relief, going three scoreless innings. Tyler Spencer started, but lasted just one inning because of a blister. He was followed to the hill by Jason Wittwer and Tim Peterson.
Taylor Smart doubled in a run for WNC while Donald Glover had one hit and scored twice.
