130 YEARS AGO

Playful prank: A party of young men conceived a waggish idea of having a little fun with a certain drug clerk on Carson street. This was accomplished by ringing the night bell and bringing him out of his bed twice. The clerk who sleeps on the second floor stepped out of his room onto the awning taking a six-shooter with him firing the pistol into the air two or three times. The young men escaped without arrest.

70 YEARS AGO

Births: A baby girl was born at the Washoe general hospital in Reno to Mrs. Frank Fettic. The father is an employee of the Pozzi Motor Co.

50 YEARS AGO

Election: Carson City's newly elected Mayor A.A. Autrand said he had been "very much excited" when his election became final.

20 YEARS AGO

Gov. Bob Miller blasts the Department of Energy as "Keystone Cop scientists and equally inept spend-happy bureaucrats," adding that Nevadans are more united than ever against a nuclear waste dump at Yucca Mountain.

10 YEARS AGO

Donations to open the portal to the Sutro Tunnel are being sought. The Fourth Ward School hopes to raise $20,000 to restore it. "In order to ensure that this local and national treasure is saved, we need the support of all Nevadans," according to Mark Preiss, Fourth Ward School executive director.
