BASEBALL: Napoli delivers against Tampa Bay

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - With Texas Rangers fans chanting his name, Mike Napoli kept fouling off pitches until getting the big hit after James Shields had hit two batters.

Then Tampa Bay's starter really got wild.

After Napoli's two-run single, Shields threw a pair of wild pitches to the same batter. One of the balls in the dirt sent home the tiebreaking run in a five-run fourth inning for the Rangers in an 8-6 win Saturday night that evened the AL division series at a game apiece.

Game 3 in the best-of-five series is Monday in Tampa. Colby Lewis pitches for the Rangers against David Price.

Yankees 9, Tigers 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Robinson Cano hit a grand slam and drove in six runs, rookie Ivan Nova pitched brilliantly into the ninth inning in an unusual relief appearance and New York shook off a 23-hour rain delay to beat Detroit in their suspended playoff opener .

A day after rain wiped out aces Justin Verlander and CC Sabathia after only 1 1/2 innings, the game resumed in the bottom of the second. No national anthem, all Yankees.

Cano barely missed a homer on his tiebreaking double in the fifth and New York broke it open with a six-run sixth against Doug Fister. Brett Gardner had a two-run single with two outs to make it 4-1 and, moments later, Cano connected off Al Alburquerque for his fourth grand slam since Aug. 11.

Phillies 11, Cardinals 6

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Kyle Lohse couldn't beat Roy Halladay twice in two weeks.

Unhittable for a few innings, Lohse later struggled and the St. Louis Cardinals blew an early lead against Halladay, losing to Philadelphia in the opener of their NL division series.

Lance Berkman hit a three-run homer off Halladay in the first, a lead that stood until Ryan Howard connected off Lohse in a five-run sixth.

Now the wild-card Cardinals turn to ace Chris Carpenter, who will pitch on three days' rest for the first time in his career in Game 2 tonight against Cliff Lee.

Brewers 4, Diamondbacks 1

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Yovani Gallardo could barely see the return tosses from catcher Jonathan Lucroy, losing them in the bright light filtering through the windows at Miller Park.

Imagine how the Diamondbacks felt.

Gallardo emerged from the shadows, outpitching Arizona ace Ian Kennedy as the Milwaukee Brewers kept winning at home with a victory in their NL division series opener .

Prince Fielder chased Kennedy with a two-out, two-run homer in the seventh inning, helping erase the stigma that the big slugger's playoffs would be anything like 2008, when he went 1 for 14.
