The original bogus gold bar swindle perpetrated on the Chinese is not new to the area. In 1876 California businessmen were induced to believe that a bogus bar stolen from a Wells, Fargo & Co., stage was buried near Reno. The bar was believed to be worth $6,500 and was stamped with fineness, weight and value (S.F. Post).
100 YEARS AGO
The hearing of the Goldfield couple on charges of white slavery of three Utah girls came before Judge Farrington this morning. The three girls on trial told of being lured to Goldfield by the couple and finding the work was not what was promised. They told of the life of a dance hall, where they sold beer, danced and the crib life. One girl was a little over 15 years of age.
70 YEARS AGO
Fourteen year old Roy Clifford of Tonopah took the lead in the biggest deer shot in Nye county pool by bringing down a buck on opening day. It is interesting to note that Roy was recovering from a gunshot wound to his foot at the time.
50 YEARS AGO
Jim Johnson will be installed as Master Councilor of the Carson City Chapter, Order of Demolay at the Masonic Temple. Clyde Lippincott will be installed as senior councilor.
20 YEARS AGO
Sexual harassment complaints top the list at the state Equal Rights Commission. Forty-five percent of the 1,100 new complaints every year reviewed by the agency are for sexual harassment.
10 YEARS AGO
A magnitude 4.6 earthquake 30 miles north of Elko Sunday apparently caused no damage or injuries. Only one aftershock has been recorded.
