Pradere says Senators aren't a 1-man team

The Carson Senators want to make one thing crystal clear - they are not a one-man team.

"Everybody thinks we're a one-man team," senior wide receiver Brock Pradere said after Carson's 57-14 thrashing of the Conrad Tanyi-less Spanish Springs Cougars on Friday night. "Every week we have to go out and let them see that we're not."

Skill players like Pradere, Chance Quilling, Matt Nolan, Joey Thurman, Andrew Gutierrez and Austin Pacheco have picked up the slack left by running back Dylan Sawyers' calf injury suffered two days before the Douglas game.

The defense also has been very solid. Against Spanish Springs, tackle Jeremy Vernon got through for a sack, Patrick Cooke spent some time in the Cougars' backfield and Logan Krupp also played well at defensive end. And, the Senators picked off three passes. Sage Smith had a return for a score, and if I'm not mistaken he had one monster hit in the second half.

The Carson defense was a little more aggressive Friday, and I think that was because they really didn't have to respect the run much, especially when they built a 29-point halftime lead.

I'll tell you what, I think Hunter Fralick may have one of the strongest throwing arms in Northern Nevada football. I haven't seen Silva from Reed this year, but Fralick can stretch defenses vertically and he's only a sophomore. I expect some big things from him in the next two years, especially if they can come up with a good running back.

I was told Saturday by a Northern Nevada football official that there is still a chance that Chance Quilling could play against Galena despite his ejection for two unsportsmanlike penalties on Friday night.

The official said that the decision is in the NIAA's hands.

It would be a key loss because Quilling is one of Carson's top tacklers, and he's really been playing well on the offensive side of the ball, too.

I'm still scratching my head over the NIAA's decision to have girls soccer games on Monday night despite the fact that the playoffs don't start until Oct. 31.

It means that teams have just one day off before hitting the field again, which makes no sense to me. It means the girls will have a complete week off before playing again. The boys will play Tuesday this week, meaning they will have a whole week off, too.

It seems that they could have kept the girls on Tuesday and the boys on Wednesday. That still would give the teams six days off.

Carson will host first-round regional playoff games, and I have to wonder why not play a boys and girls doubleheader? I'm sure it would draw a pretty good crowd and relieve some stress off the folks at Carson who work the gate and snack bar.

Colby Blueberg was on the sidelines for Friday night's homecoming game against Spanish Springs.

Blueberg, who received a baseball scholarship to the University of Nevada, said he's currently being used as a pitcher.

Blueberg said he will participate in the annual inter-squad series later this month.

Carson High will be the host site for this year's regional wrestling tournament which is certainly a nice honor. I have no doubt that Tim McCarthy & Co., will put on a very good show.

The NIAA also announced that Carson will host the 2014 state high school track and field championships for the first time in school history, according to athletic director Bob Bateman.

In my opinion, Carson has the best track and field facility in Northern Nevada. I like the fact that the jumping pits are away from the running action, and the throwing areas are separate but close enough people who sit in the visitor's bleachers to take a look.
