Positive Karate USA students earn black belts

Fourteen members from the Positive Karate USA studios in Carson City and Kings Beach earned first and second-degree black belts last week in Reno.

The members were: Jason Ott, Rob Reardon, Kealey Meyers, Zoe Ott, Ann Everest, Gavin Meyers, Jake Ott, James Jungen, Tyler Davis, Nash Owens, Lulu Segoviano, Sarah Coolidge, Alex Brambila and Brian Reinstra.

The youngest were Meyers and Everest, both age 10, who have been training in Tang Soo Do with Master John Maris for the past four years. The oldest was Ms. Sarah Coolidge, 53, achieving her second-degree belt.

Updegrove honored by Liberty League

TROY, N.Y. - The Liberty League announced that Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Alex Updegrove was named the male swimmer of the week.

Updegrove, a graduate student, helped lead the Engineer men to a 168.5-125.5 victory over Roger Williams in the season opener last week. A captain, he won the 50 freestyle in a time of 22.95 and went on to claim victory in the 100 free with a mark of 50.37.

The former Carson High School standout has had a stellar career for the Engineers and is the current school record holder in four categories, including the 100 backstroke and the 100 butterfly.

Eagle Valley nabs consolation title

Eagle Valley Middle School went 3-1 this past weekend to take the consolation bracket of the South Tahoe Optimist Tournament.

EVMS opened up the tourney with a 27-25 loss to Cunha Middle School. Ivy Pembrook led the way with 18 points. EVMS then beat Martinez Middle School 51-17 thanks to 21 points by Brianna Alvarado and 12 by Pembrook. Josie Share reached double figures with 10 points. In game three, Pembrook led the way with 16 points in a 30-10 victory over Avery Middle School. EVMS then beat Carson Valley Middle School 25-20 to win the bracket. Pembrook again led the way with 17 points.

Reno fastpitch looks for players

A Reno-based 18U fastpitch softball travel team will be holding tryouts soon.

The team will be playing 18U/Gold Showcase and championship play only. Call Rick Darby for more info at 775-691-6556.

Jr. Midgets crush Tahoe

The Jr. Midget Senators defeated the South Lake Tahoe Vikings 39-8 Saturday for their fourth win of the season.

Carson scored on runs of 2 and 62 yards by Dennis Krueger and Dylan Wemheuer respectively.

Carson's pass game was in high gear with Connor Pradere tossing touchdown passes to Gage Gunzburg, Johnny Cavilia and Jordan Warren.

Carson's offensive line played extremely well all night led by Conner Larkin, Jarod Butler, Nick Tibma, Jordan Aikins, Nick Andreas, Justin and Phillip Lopez, Tyler Christy and Tanner McNabb.

Carson will play its first playoff game Friday night at Governors field at 8 p.m. against the Sparks Wolfpack.

Tiny Mites play to tie with Sparks.

Carson Senator Tiny Mites and the Sparks Wolfpack played to a 30-30 tie in Pop Warner action over the weekend.

Vinny Ferretti, Dawson Main and Jacob Hanson all had outstanding long touchdown runs.

Midgets finish undefeated

Carson overcame an injury to Elijah Fajayan to beat the Reno Wolf Pack 22-6 to finish the regular season 6-0.

The Senators scored on a 45-yard pass play from Brady O'Keefe to Vic Castro Jr. and on runs of 62 yards and 11 yards by O'Keefe. Josiah Pongasi added 137 yards rushing and Asa Carter rushed for 121 yards. Nathan Massic added two 2-point kicks as the Senators were able to score 22 points.

On defense, the Senators played very well allowing just one touchdown on one break away play. Sacks by Bradley Moose and Kevin Rusler helped stop a Reno drive late in the game and Gregory Wallace played well at safety breaking up two key plays on a couple Reno passes.

For the season the Senators have scored 176 points while the defense has allowed only 39 points.

Hempler, Scharfe and McCurdy win titles

Skip Hempler, Steve Scharfe and Marshall McCurdy won their respective title at Empire Ranch's recent Senior Men's Club event.

Hempler won Flight A with a 65 followed by Phillip King and Ed Rector and James Sand, each with 68s.

Scharfe won Flight B with a 61, eight shots better than Bob Pitcock and Don Wilson. McCurdy won Flight C with a 65, two shots better than Ron Popp and three better than Walt Blizzard.

Stableford winners at Carson Valley GC

Daryle Lewis, Chuck Householder, Gary Carsten and Gerald Bing combined for 80 points to win Carson Valley Men's Club 4-man Stableford tournament on Oct. 23.

Russ Coons, Charles Poe, John Guidicatti and John Arens were second at 78, while Bob Pemberton, Steve Garrett, Anthony Moore and Al Goldberg were third at 51.

Free players, coaches clinic offered

The USSF licensed coaching staff joins Capital Soccer Club in celebrating another successful season by offering a free players and coaches clinic.

The clinic will be from 9 a.m.-noon Nov. 12 at the Edmonds Sports Complex.

Nevada Wolf Pack soccer coaches and players and Capital Soccer Club staff will be available for a variety of training sessions. The clinic is for ages 5 to 18. Sign up at www.capsoccer.net.
