Andrew Homan of Lake Tahoe, an avid bicycle-racing fan and author, will speak at 6 p.m. Tuesday about his recently published book, "Life in the Slipstream: The Legend of Bobby Walthour Sr." Homan, whose writings have appeared in cycling magazines such as Cycle Sport and Velo News, will give his presentation in the auditorium at the library, 900 N. Roop St., Carson City.

Though today's extreme sports showcase athletes' amazing feats of skill and daring, cyclist Bobby Walthour Sr. (1878-1949) should rank high on the list of accomplished daredevils. Beginning his career as a sprinter and finally gaining renown as a motor-pacer, Walthour won U.S. championships in 1902 and 1903 and world championships in 1904 and 1905. A motor-pacer is a cyclist who follows perilously close to a motorcycle and drafts from the slipstream.
