Carson Valley tops Carson 12s in tourney

If well-played baseball is your thing, then Field 2 of Governor's Field was the place to be Tuesday night.

Strong defense, good pitching and clutch hitting were all on display during the 11-12 bracket game between Carson City and Carson Valley.

In the end, it was the boys from the south who moved on in the loser's bracket game.

After Carson City tied the game in the top of the sixth, Carson Valley won 4-3 on a walkoff. Hayden Brown's sharp single up the middle on a 3-2 pitch from Jayson Artz drove in the winning run.

Artz, who pitched himself into a 2-on, no-out jam, almost worked his way out of it before Brown's hit.

Carson Valley took the lead in the third inning when Wyatt Rooker singled and advanced to third on Lake Saladis' single and a throwing error by Carson. Saladis took second on the error. Both runners scored on Jayden Foster's single. Carson starter Daniel Morrison limited the damage by retiring the next three hitters.

Carson came back to tie the game in the fourth, when Jerry Thomas hit a monster home run to left field. Thomas' homer scored Artz.

Carson Valley would regain the lead in the bottom of the inning. Morrison walked the first two hitters, before turning the ball over to Brandon Gagnon.

CV loaded the bases on a bunt single when Carson's defense had a miscommunication. Rooker came up with the bases full and knocked the go-ahead single.

Gagnon retired the next three hitters to strand the bases loaded.

Down by one headed into the sixth, Artz took the first pitch of the inning over the fence in left to tie the game.

That set the stage for Browns' heroics.

Carson Valley plays Thursday in a loser's bracket contest against Truckee.

Carson plays Thursday in a consolation bracket game against Sparks National.

On Monday, the Carson 9/10 All-Stars were eliminated from the tournament by Carson Valley, 7-5.

Carson Valley opened up a 6-0 lead in the first innings as Carson's defense struggled. Diego Lopez pitched well for Carson, throwing strikes.

Carson started its comeback with three runs in the second. In the third, Carson's Vernon Painter's hit put runners on second and third but CVLL turned a double play to end the momentum.

Carson scored two more runs in the fifth to make it 6-5. CVLL added an insurance run in the sixth.
