Senator Square: Craft fair fundraiser returns to Carson High School

Leadership students are preparing to attend their annual Western Regional conference hosted by Reed High School at Mendive Middle School in Reno.Carson High will be sending two workshops, “I Am Lovable and Capable,” presented by Jody Ostrander and Mariah Whitcome, and “Life’s a Roller Coaster and Sometimes You Need to Scream a Little” by Cindy Juchzter and Lydia Lopez. These workshops will be competing to reach the state and national level by the end of the year. We also will be sending in five JC group leaders Hannah Novak, Mallory Wilson, Odile Reid, Emmy Heller and Morgan Fine. The rest of the leadership students also will be attending the conference as delegates.Carson High will be hosting its annual Thanksgiving scavenger hunt Thursday to raise donations for our local FISH program. Carson High School students and clubs will be going across town to look for turkeys, canned goods and any other types of Thanksgiving type foods. (Report submitted by Lydia Lopez, public relations officer)CRAFT FAIRThe annual CHS craft fair will be back from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Nov. 16 and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 17. Money raised will be given back to student groups at CHS. Last year, approximately $8,000 was given back to the groups.It is a great time to shop for gifts. Admission to the fair on Friday is $2, which is also good for Saturday. Admission for Saturday only is $1.50 or $1 and a can of food that is donated to FISH.CARNETA FUNDRAISERVisitors to the annual Carson High School Holiday Crafts Fair will also have a chance to look through the school’s yearbooks which date to the 1920s and high school newspapers dating back to 1950.In addition to viewing these unique historical archives, visitors may buy yearbooks from past years in this “Garage Sale” fundraiser. All money raised will benefit the school’s publication class which prints the Carneta yearbook and maintains the online Senator News newspaper. The “Garage Sale” will operate in Room 136, near the north foyer of the high school. Books between 2007 and 2012 sell for $75 each. However, books before 2007 will be on sale for $30 each, a special garage sale price.These extra yearbooks are available because the school often gets overrun book copies. Books also are donated back to the school from families of CHS alumni or are left over following end-of-the-year sales. The Carneta Garage Sale will be opened in Room 136 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 16 and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 17.The Garage Sale is operating during the yearly Holiday Crafts Fair that will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Nov. 16 and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 17. Take advantage of all the projects we are involved in, earn service points and help out your community!Coat drive: Please bring in children-size coats in good condition to Mrs. Glenn’s room (224). The coats will be delivered to Kids in Transition — children who live in cars, motels or doubling up with other families.Craft Fair is Nov. 16 and 17. Come and help out the vendors!NHS is donating $500 to struggling families of Empire Elementary School. The money will go toward purchasing turkeys and hams for the holidays. We are also organizing the food drive. Please bring canned fruit, vegetables, pie fillings, sugar, flour, mashed potatoes, beans to room 224. Anybody is welcome and encouraged to participate in the food drive.Thank you for all your support!HONORS GOVERNMENT STUDENTS TO COMPETEHonors government classes preparing for a mock congressional hearing competition known as “We the People” have had the honor of having a few distinctive guest lecturers this semester. Casey Saunders from Volunteer Attorneys for Rural Nevadans lectured on the influences of British documents and government on U.S. government.Chad Minnis and Janice Baldwin of TeamNevada for Romney Campaign took time out of their busy day to give information about the Republican platform and electing Romney. Frank Poppe of the Obama Campaign stopped to educate the classes about the Democratic platform of President Obama.Terry Rankin, former insurance commissioner for the State of Nevada, gave the students an interesting lecture on the Supreme Court and how cases even make it to that level, with a few personal stories of her own cases being heard by the high court.And finally, Kevin Benson, deputy attorney general for Nevada, discussed the matter of how campaign finance laws work in relation to our First Amendment rights of free speech, focusing some of his lecture on the U.S. Supreme Court Case of Citizens United Inc. vs. FEC.The honors government classes will compete in a school hearing on Nov. 20, with the top team from CHS advancing on to the District We the People competition at UNR on Dec. 15.Thank you to the guest speakers for taking the time to educate our students with your expertise. She maintains a weighted grade-point average of 4.6.Maddi’s plans are to attend either UNR or San Diego State University to pursue a mechanical engineering degree.
