Breuer blanks Fernley on 5 hits

Rebecka Breuer pitched and batted Carson High’s softball team to an easy 9-0 triumph over visiting Fernley in a nonleague game Tuesday afternoon.

Carson, 3-7, and tied for fifth place with Wooster in the Sierra League standings, hosts Reed at 3:45 p.m. Thursday.

Breuer threw 99 pitches, 55 for strikes. She fanned three and walked two.

Carson put this one out of reach early with one in the first and six more in the second.

In the first, Bailey Allen singled, moved to second on a bunt by Kandis Tuttle, to third on a single by Jen Purcell and scored on a sacrifice fly by Breuer.

The big hits in the six-run second came from Michelle Perry, Purcell, Ellise McGowan and Breuer.

Fernley got runners to third twice in the contest.

Purcell and Allen both went 3-for-4, while Breuer added two hits. Perry, McGowan and Malia Tiffer added a hit apiece.

SPANISH SPRINGS 10, DOUGLAS 0

SPARKS — Spanish Springs scored eight times in the fourth inning and shut out Douglas in a non-league game on Tuesday.

Douglas is 14-10 overall and 6-4 in league play.

Spanish Springs’ Karlie Merritt tossed a 1-hitter with seven strikeouts. Douglas’ only hit came from Allison Meyer.

Douglas had a rough time in the field, making six errors which led to three unearned runs.

Myrissa Prince led the Cougars with three hits, while Kelsey Stroshne, Taylor Helton, Merritt and Amanda Barham added two each.

BASEBALL

TIGERS POUNDED BY RENO, 14-2

RENO — The Douglas baseball team lost 14-2 at league-leading Reno Tuesday afternoon.

Douglas had built an early 2-0 lead after Dusty Fisher scored on a passed ball and Kyle Johnson scored on a Cody Carter single.

Reno, though, quickly turned things around, hanging up eight runs in the bottom of the second after Douglas fell victim to several errors on defense.

From there, the Tigers offense dried up while Reno piled on the runs.

The Tigers dropped to 9-8 in league pay (15-11 overall) after opening up the league slate 8-0.

In the past week, Douglas has faced three of the top teams in the league. They’ll host Reno at 3:45 p.m. Thursday.

“We’ve had a tough time and we’re just trying to find some sort of momentum heading into Thursday,” Douglas coach Bruce Jacobsen said. “The breaks haven’t been going our way, but at some point we have to start making our own luck.

“The way the league is shaping up, and with how all these teams are beating up on each other, we could still end up in the upper echelon. We just have turn this around. We have a five-game swing to dig deep and figure it out.”
