Gov. Brian Sandoval will be off all this week on vacation celebrating his 50th birthday, which is Tuesday.
A spokesman for Sandoval said she didn’t have his schedule for the week but that Sandoval had said earlier he planned to see some of Nevada’s historic and scenic sights.
He will be back to work the following week — which includes a Board of Examiners meeting and a second meeting with U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz in Las Vegas to discuss plans for shipping nuclear waste to the state.
He described their first conversation July 18 as “frank and blunt” when they first discussed Sandoval’s objections to the plan that involves shipping what state officials describe as highly radioactive waste materials to the National Security Site in Southern Nevada. Sandoval and others say the material in those 400 containers is unsuitable for the site.
There was no indication after that meeting that the Energy Department intends to back away from the plan.
