Skating Rink. Owing to the inclemency of the weather, there was not as many at the rink last evening as on opening night. A club to be known as the “Pioneer Skating Club” was formed, some 25 at the signing. The club, as soon as they have 40 members, will have exclusive use of the rink on Monday and Thursday evenings.

130 years ago

Just as the train left Reno yesterday, a quarrel took place between Dick Allen and L. Adkinson that resulted with Adkinson being shot. It appears Allen was getting on the train when he was accused of stealing $1,200 by Adkinson. Words passed and Adkinson shot Allen in the face.

100 years ago

C. L. Deady, surveyor-general and registrar at the state land office, reports that during November receipts of his office were $8,976.63 for the sale of state lands.

Floyd Loveless must pay with his life in the lethal gas chamber of the Nevada State Prison the week of Feb. 13 for the murder of Constable A.H. Berning at Carlin a year ago.

The Sierra Ground Rescue Group — the Jeep Patrol — recently pulled the image of a man to safety who had been stranded on the far side of the swollen waters of the Carson River. The victim’s name was Rocky Fall. Later, the group judged Mr. Fall to be a real dummy to get himself into such a predicament.

Judges should crack down on drunken drivers and allow victim representatives to testify in court, Candy Lightner, who founded a national rights organization after her daughter was killed, said Wednesday in Reno.

Trent Dolan is the son of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
