Workman places 8th at Reno’selite tournament

The Greenwave wrestling team sent one to the medal round of the one of the toughest high school tournaments in the country last weekend.

Sophomore Trae Workman won his first three bouts of the 145-pound weight class before dropping into the consolation round to snap his 16-0 record on Saturday at the Reno Tournament of Champions at the Reno Events Center. Workman, though, bounced back with two wins in the consolation bracket, setting up a battle for seventh place. Workman, though, fell short and settled for eighth place as the Greenwave prepares for another tournament this week.

Senior Anthony Sabatino (126) was one win shy of joining Workman for a medal bout but lost in his final bout of the tournament as all six Fallon wrestlers won at least two bouts. Fallon returns to Reno after Christmas for the two-day Sierra Nevada Classic at the Reno Livestock Events Center where most of the region’s schools will compete.

Workman encountered a bye to open the two-day tournament before pinning Nathan Spilker (Stansbury) in the second period and then decisioning Joseph Clemente (LaSalle Institute), 9-2. Branson Ashworth (Spanish Fork) pinned Workman with 16 seconds left in the first period, but the Greenwave grappler came back stronger in the consolation round. Workman pinned Uriah Vigil (Pomona) at the 2:52 mark. His final win of the tournament didn’t come easy as he muscled out a 9-7 victory over Parker Bohannan (Yukon).

After opening with a bye, Sabatino won two consecutive bouts before falling into the consolation bracket of the 126 weight class. Sabatino pinned his first two opponents, Julian Kim (Sutter Union) and Aaron Molesky (Palmer), but fell victim to the pin after Josh Rosales (Pomona) bounced him out of the championship bracket. Needing one more win to advance to the medal round, Sabatino was pinned by Baerett Nelson (Idaho Falls) in the final period.

Senior Clay Amezquita opened the 126 weight class with a bye before scoring a 4-2 decision over Nash Brown (Stansbury) on Friday. After losing by pinfall in his next match, Amezquita dropped a heart-breaking 11-9 decision to Luke Algate (Centennial).

Despite dropping his first bout, senior Robert White reeled off three-straight wins (including a bye) over David Bucha (Emmaus) and Cameron Jones (Reed) in the 132 class. Kyle Moore (Vacaville) ended White’s winning streak with a pin in the final period.

In the 138 division, sophomore Sam Goings got off on the right foot after receiving a bye. Goings defeated Gavin Arnold, 10-4, but was pinned quickly by James Saylor (Easton) 34 seconds into the match. Goings came back with a second-period pin against Jason Romero (Pomona) but lost his final bout by pinfall against Zach Rockwell (Spring Creek).

Senior Dakota Schelling see-sawed during the 182 division of the tournament as he opened with a 14-0 major decision win over Craig Stahlecker (Easton) on Friday. Schelling was pinned in the first period of his second match by John Hensley (Meridian-HD-ID) but came back with a win in the consolation round. Schelling pinned Yann Ondele (Philipsburg) in the second period but lost by technical fall (15-0) to Weston Taylor (Mountain View).
