Carson Prespective: The week ahead is chock full of public, private sector activities

Possible purchase of the BRIC building near City Hall, a performance review of City Manager Larry Werner’s work, and a State of the City speech by Mayor Robert Crowell are on tap this week. The first two items are on the Board of Supervisors’ Thursday meeting agenda. The mayor’s speech is Tuesday morning during a Chamber of Commerce breakfast at the Gold Dust West Casino.The building housing the Business Resource Innovation Center houses various city staff and is at 108 E. Proctor St., just north of city hall downtown. “It is improbable that the city (government) will move from the facility in the near future, so it makes financial sense to exercise the option in the lease agreement to purchase the building,” a staff report said.The lease has cost city government more than $9,099 per month and will increase 3 percent at mid-year, according to a city manager’s memo, so he recommends purchase.“The (lease) agreement also has an option to purchase price of $1,102,299 after the 12th month and prior to June 30, 2013,” Werner wrote. “The property consists of the 9,458-square-foot office building and the 6,205-square-foot parking lot behind city hall.”The company involved in the agreement is Fireside Investments LLC. Werner’s performance review immediately precedes the BRIC building purchase item on the agenda. Supporting documents from Human Resources Director Melanie Bruketta list city manager achievements and provide related information.After the review and any action, the board may set a date next month to set goals and objectives “to be used to evaluate his performance in January 2014.” Among other items on the agenda are:Possible extension from October this year into 2014 for the period in which the Carrington Co. can secure a tenant for the former Gottschalk’s space in Carson Mall, extension until January 2016 of the period for development of the Arrowhead Business Park on Ryan Way, and discussion of cost recovery options for the city’s Eagle Valley Golf Course complex.“The Carrington Co. is currently working with a potential tenant to fill the vacant space who may wish to open in 2014 rather than 2013,” officials said.This first board meeting with new supervisors Brad Bonkowski and Jim Shirk in place after their November elections will come two days after Mayor Crowell’s State of the City speech. Chamber members and others at the 7:30 a.m. Tuesday meeting are expected to learn his views on where the city is headed and, according to Chamber Director Ronni Hannaman, hope to get clues as to how business should proceed as well. • John Barrette covers Carson City government.
