Pack rallies past UC Davis

The University of Nevada baseball team scored a run in the ninth to come from behind and defeat UC Davis, 11-10, on Tuesday in Davis, Calif.

The Wolf Pack (11-6) have won back to back games after the late-inning theatrics it used to beat the Aggies, who fell to 7-10 on the season with the loss. Six Nevada players had hits on the day and four of the six had multi-hit games including Jamison Rowe who was 3-for-5 with four runs scored.

Adam Whitt earned his first win of the season to bring his record to 1-2, while freshman Michael Fain pitched a perfect ninth, including two strikeouts, to earn his fifth save of the season.

With the game tied at 10 in the top of the ninth, Rowe came to the plate with Tommy Niebergall on third and two outs. Rowe struck out swinging, but reached first base on a wild pitch by Aggies pitcher Max Cordy, which allowed Niebergall to score from third and gave the Wolf Pack the lead for good.

The Pack began the scoring in the first inning when it scored three times. Rowe led off the game with a single, stole second base and scored on Kewby Meyer’s single to left. Meyer later scored after the Aggies second baseman Steven Patterson booted a ball hit by Brett Jones, which was then kicked around by right fielder Tanner Biley. Brooks Klein doubled home Austin Byler for one of his two RBIs on the game.

After the Pack added insurance runs in the second and top of the fifth, the Aggies responded in their half of the fifth after two errors kept the inning alive. Wolf Pack starter Barry Timko was chased from the game after he got into a jam.

In the sixth, the Aggies reeled off seven consecutive hits while facing four Pack pitchers, and scored six runs to lead 9-5. The Pack scored twice in the seventh and three times in the eighth to tie the game before the ninth-inning comeback.

The Wolf Pack opens Mountain West conference play today against Air Force. First pitch is at 2 p.m. today at Peccole Park.
