WASHOE CITY (AP) — Officials have upgraded the historical status of an 1860s mansion between Reno and Carson City.
The National Register of Historic Places elevated Bowers Mansion earlier this month from a landmark with local significance to a landmark with national significance.
The mansion was built between 1862 and 1863 and sits on old highway 395 in Washoe City. Original owners Sanford and Eilley Bowers made their fortune in hard rock mining.
State preservation officials who announced the status change Thursday say the home is an early example of how wealth from hard rock mining allowed for impressive mansions away from mine sites.
The home was restored in the 1960s, and is now part of the Bowers Mansion Regional Park.
