Starting Wednesday, drivers will see traffic-fatality statistics on digital freeway signs statewide.

The plan was created to raise driver awareness because of the high number of traffic fatalities in 2012, a spokesman for the Nevada Department of Transportation said. There were 258.

NDOT Director Rudy Malfabon said the fatality messages will be followed by safety messages reminding drivers to buckle up, as well as other reminders.

“These are so much more than numbers,” he said. “They are a wife, a father, a brother, a friend or neighbor, and there’s no better reason or stronger reminder for us all to buckle up.”

NDOT’s strategic highway goal is to cut annual fatalities in half by 2030.
