Oct. 24, 1935 - Sep. 17, 2013

Oscar Lawrence Kelley, Jr. was born October 24, 1935 to Oscar Sr. and Edith Kelley in Rosedale, Kansas. He passed away September 17, 2013. He attended school in Kansas City. He was in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956 serving in Germany. One highlight of his service was the opportunity to play guitar behind Elvis Presley at the NCO club. Oscar worked in Kansas City and played music with a group named Wildcat Kelley and the Blenders. Oscar traveled to Alaska in 1975 with a jazz group and found his home there. He met Sandy in July 1978 and they married January 26, 1980. Oscar adopted Sandy’s son Zed and thereafter never wanted Zed referred to as other than his son. Megan was born in January 1981 to a proud and hands on dad.

Oscar worked as a salesman for Kirby from 1976 until he retired in 1997 due to hip and breathing problems. Oscar’s genuine love of people contributed to his successful legacy as a salesman for Kirby.

Oscar lived in Alaska from 1975 until 2008 when an opportunity and surprise decision was made to move to Nevada. He enjoyed new friends, an accessible home, a new community, and especially a warmer climate. When asked how he was doing Oscar always replied, “I’m in good shape for the shape I’m in.”

Oscar will be remembered for his outgoing, open hearted approach to all he met. He would always put a smile on your face and look for ways to make you laugh or entertain even after his health took a turn.

Oscar was preceded in death by his mother and his sister, Constance. He is survived by his wife, Sandy; son, Zed; daughter-in-law, Dena; and granddaughter, Lela of Burbank, California; daughter, Megan and grandson, Quinton of Anchorage, Alaska; son, Anthony Kelley of Kansas City, and niece, Rosalyn Smith of Las Vegas, Nevada.

Memorial service is Wednesday, Sep. 25th, 2:00 p.m. at Carson City United Methodist Church; 212 N. Division St Carson City, NV. Remembrances can be sent to the family at 1247 N Santa Barbara Minden, NV 89423.
