Community Sports Roundup: Nevada Wolf Pack hosting football camps

The University of Nevada football camp is slated for June 23-24 at Mackay Stadium. Head coach Brian Polian and his staff will be the instructors.

The two-day camp is designed to teach basic football fundamentals and techniques. This is a non-contact camp for athletes in grades one through seven, offering instruction in offense and defense, positional drill work and there will be a punt-pass and kick competition.

Campers will be grouped by age, size and ability.

The cost of the camp is $75. Each camper will receive a T-shirt, and campers are asked to bring athletic shorts, athletic shoes, a hat, sunscreen and a water bottle.

Youth backcountry camp scheduled by Tahoe Rim

The Tahoe Rim Trail Association, the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science and the American Red Cross are partnering for their seventh annual Youth Backcounty Camp summer season.

Local teens learn leadership skills, navigation skills, wilderness ethics, local ecology and geology, wilderness tracking, and backcountry cooking and nutrition.

The 2014 dates are as follows:

YBCC Tahoe trackers: Ages 12-14, June 29-July 1, private trip

Wilderness first aid: Ages 15-17, July 6-10, $375

YBCC Tahoe trackers: Ages 12-14, July 20-22, $240

Two aces at Silver Oak on consecutive days

On March 23, Kevin Johnson, a member of Silver Oak Sunday Men’s Club, used a pitching wedge to ace the 129-yard par-3 sixth hole. His first-ever ace was witnessed by Larry Johnson, Jim Fuller and Frank Maricich.

The next day, John Beetley, used a 7-iron ace the 167-yard par-3 seventh hole. Mike Crosswait, John Bowa and Jim Barth witnessed the shot.


Silver Oak to host women’s golf social

Starting on May 2 and running through early October, women of different abilities are invited to come to Silver Oak to learn the rules and technique of golf from James Potter, Silver Oak’s assistant golf pro, and helpful staff.

Optional instruction begins at 4:30 p.m. with a shotgun start at 5:30. The $25 fee includes instruction, range balls and a complimentary glass of wine.

Harlow group leads way at Empire golf outing

The team of Tom Harlow, Bill Kaster and Paul Lockwood finished in first place at the Empire Ranch Senior Men’s Club event at Dayton Valley on March 26.

Second place went to Gary Mick, Dan Powers, William Milligan and Ivan Lepire, and third place went to Dino Dicianno, Roger Maxwell, Ken Stone and Mike Rogers.


Essary, Budjako win Stableford event

The team of Dan Essary and Matt Budjako had a score of 45 in the Carson Valley Men’s Golf Club two-man team Stableford event held on Sunday.

John Carey and Jack Sparman were second at 44. Augie Martinez and Marc Menezes finished third with a 43. In a fourth place tie were the teams of Bob Pemberton and Paul Finan and Brick Ludington and John Pearson — both with a 40.

Closest to the pin was won by Essary (Hole No. 1), Menezes (Hole No. 5), Brent Holderman (Hole No. 17) and John Guidicatti (Hole No. 18)

The next tournament will be on Sunday.
