Troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol were dispatched to a crash Monday night involving a pedestrian who was fatally struck by an automobile near the intersection of State Route 878 (Farm District Road) and Jennys Lane in Fernley.

The NHP said 63-year-old Sylvestra Alvarado of Fernley was walking westbound across Farm District Road in or near the marked crosswalk when she was struck by a black 2007 Cadillac CTS 4-door sedan driven by Antionette Vann, 49, of Fallon. The NHP said Vann was travelling south on Farm District Road, and her two children were riding in the vehicle. The left front of the sedan struck Alvarado, thus causing fatal injuries to her and she was pronounced deceased at the scene.

No one in the sedan was injured and Vann is cooperating with investigators. The NHP said alcohol is not believed to be a contributing factor.

Farm District Road is a two-lane roadway where the posted speed limit is 35 miles per hour. The intersection was closed for several hours Monday night while troopers completed their on-scene portion of the investigation.

Trooper Doug Hildebrand of the Major Accident Investigation Team or M.A.I.T. is investigating the accident. Witnesses or anyone with additional information are encouraged to contact him at 775 -689-4623 or dhildebrand@dps.state.nv.us regarding case number NHP-140401241.

Once the investigation is completed, the NHP said any applicable charges will be forwarded to the Lyon County District Attorney’s Office for review.
