The National Weather Services said the powerful Pacific storm that came into the area Tuesday was expected to last through early Thursday.

Up to three feet of much-needed snow is expected to fall in the mountains. Three years of devastating drought has left the Sierra Nevada snowpack — which counts for most of the state’s water supply — at just 24 percent of normal for this time of year. In Carson City, the National Weather Service called for an 80 percent chance of rain today.

Snow levels are running around 7,000 feet around Lake Tahoe this morning, according to the National Weather Service.

As of 9:30 a.m., almost one inch of preciptation was measured at the Carson City Airport in the past 24 hours.
