The Carson high boys basketball team ended the Torrey Pines Holiday Classic on a high note with a 42-40 win over Westview of San Diego on Tuesday.

Carson jumped out to a 12-5 lead after the first quarter before Westview outscored the Senators 18-9 to take a 23-21 halftime lead. But Carson regained control by outscoring Westview 14-6 to take a 35-29 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

It looked like Carson was going to put the game away by scoring on a breakaway layup to take a six-point lead. But the shot was blocked and Westview came back the other way to score to pull within two points. After Carson missed the front end of a one-and-one, Westview had a chance to tie, but the Senators came up with a defensive stop to preserve the win.

Carson coach Carlos Mendeguia said his team’s pressure defense and half court trap was effective, adding the half court trap led to several transition baskets.

“It got us going offensively and defensively,” said Mendeguia about the trap. “We came out and played with some energy. The guys showed poise.”

Asa Carter and Cameron Price each scored 12 points and Kyle Steele added six points for Carson.
