City Council members met for their first regularly scheduled meeting of the new year on Tuesday and took action to approve airport projects.

City Engineer Jim Souba presented information to the council on two projects that must be done at the Fallon Municipal Airport. Souba discussed the planning and design services for an updated airport layout drawing and design plans and specifics for updating the runway.

“Every 10 years or so you’re supposed to upgrade your airport design, and we are due for that,” Souba said. “We aren’t able to apply for anymore grants until we upgrade the design.”

Souba said that design services only are needed for the runway project. He said the design would show the upgrades that are needed for the crosswinds runway, an existing dirt runway. The design will include laying grid, fixing the drainage and providing an all-weather gravel surface for the runway.

“It would be a tremendous upgrade from the current runway,” Souba said.

The council approved both projects and awarded them to Akins North America for approximately $80,000 each.

Other items approved included the following:

Approved UbiquiTel Leasing Company easement on Rattlesnake Hill for fiber optic cable installation and wireless communications purposes.
