The U.S. Attorney’s office in Nevada collected a total of $18 million in forfeits and fines during fiscal year 2013, the majority of it ($10.5 million) in criminal actions.

Nevada U.S. Attorney Daniel Bogden said collecting fines is an important aspect of the office’s work since those monies help victims of crime, pay restitution and are used for a variety of other law enforcement purposes.

He pointed out that the 2013 collections were nearly three times the entire budget of the Nevada U.S. Attorney’s Office.

In addition to the money collected from criminal actions, Bogden said $1.6 million was collected in civil actions and $5.9 million collect in forfeiture actions.

“The department’s enforcement actions help not only to ensure justice is served but also deliver a valuable return to the taxpayers,” he said.
