Tahoe-Douglas Elks host Great Gatsby dinner show

With a formal black and white dinner, women dressed in flapper garb and men in ‘20s-style suits, a night out at the Great Gatsby dinner show will rival even Gatsby’s greatest parties.

The Tahoe-Douglas Elks Club will host their annual event as the Great Gatsby Dinner Show in honor of the Nevada State Elks President Lee Butts, and his wife Ruth from Las Vegas on Saturday.

“We’re asking people to get in the party mood and dress as if it were the ’20s,” said Mary Hammond director of the show and wife of an Elk.

Hammond has directed the event in previous years.

“The year before last we did a melodrama, and that was very successful,” Hammond said. “Last time we had about 150 people, but we had to cut it down to 130 this year to make more room for interaction with the audience.”

The show will consist of comedy, a live radio show, music and more.

“I got the idea last year when the movie came out,” Hammond said.

However, don’t expect Daisy and Tom Buchanan to be running around the show, or even the elusive Jay Gatsby.

“It’s not really about Gatsby, it’s more like a party that he would throw,” she clarified.

Despite the lack of the famous characters, it will be as if it is a true 1920s soiree.

“There will be songs from the ‘20s, the women dressed in flapper dresses and men dressed in suits from that era,” Hammond explained. “The decorations will be very formal, a black and white dinner, white table cloths and black net decorations. We want it to look like an old-fashioned nightclub.”

According to Hammond, it will be a vaudeville kind of show.

“I’m just excited to see everyone have a good time,” said Hammond.

Proceeds from the show benefit various Elks projects including seniors, veterans, scholarships for high school students and more.

Doors open at 4:45 p.m. with the show at 7:15 p.m.

The tickets are $28 each and must be purchased by Thursday from any Elks member.
