100 Years Ago

Warning by Chief Hillhouse. The scattering of small bands of the “army of unemployed” throughout California leads Chief Hillhouse of Reno to issue the warning. “Lock your doors at night and be sure all windows are secured. While it is hardly likely that any of the hoards will venture from the main line of the railroad, should they succeed in reaching Nevada at all, yet it may be well for people to be on the watch. The commander of the army announced that they had in their ranks burglars, safe crackers, and murders, and that he could not be held responsible if their demands were not granted at Sacramento, and needless to say, they were not.

The Eagle’s New Linotype Machine. The Eagle has its new model No. 15 Linotype machine nicely installed and running. Mrs. Williams returned Tuesday from Reno, where she had been attending her through illness, and has taken charge of the new machine. After six weeks experience in the Linotype School in San Francisco, Mrs. Williams finds the work of operating the No. 15 comparatively easy.

75 Years Ago

Youngster Signed by San Diego. Al “Lefty” Olsen, 17 year old youth who pitched in the Western Nevada Amateur Baseball League last summer for Smith Valley, has been signed by San Diego for this season and is being touted as big league timber.

Camp Newland Fisticuffers will Enter Reno Bouts. When fight fans of western Nevada gather in Reno for an intercity boxing card, they will find this community represented there by the cream of the crop of fisticuffers from Camp Newlands, local CCC Company, which has to offer some good boys in four weight divisions.

50 Years Ago

Centennial Commission to Trace Early Day Nevada Families. First replies to a questioner recently sent out by the Centennial Commission are making evident thousands of Nevadans trace their identification with the state back to early day families who came here prior to January 1, 1900. One point being emphasized that the early day families being recorded need to have been born in the state. Virtually all early day families which put down roots here before the end of the preceding century came from other states.

Southwest Gas to Start Pipeline Project. The Southwest Gas Corporation has applied to the Public Service Commission for authority to extend a gas transmission line from a point near Fallon to the industrial facilities near Gabbs, it was announced this week.
