Turnover costs Douglas chance to score on first drive

It didn’t take long to figure out the turning point of the game.

It came on the game’s first offensive play when Douglas star Cale Kynett (16 carries, 108 yards) fumbled after a 23-yard run inside the Carson 20-yard line.

The turnover wasted a 57-yard opening kick-off return by Nick Abreu, and definitely set the tempo for the game.

“I think it was the turning point of the game,” Carson coach Blair Roman said.

“I think it knocked the wind out of their sails a little bit. Douglas’ offense was unable to move the ball well after that.”

“I think that was demoralizing to them,” said senior defensive end Brady Rivera.

Kynett’s 23-yard run accounted for more than half of Douglas’ first-half yards.

The Tigers managed just 44 yards in the first 24 minutes.

The burly running back took a shot from Nolan Shine and then was thrown for a 4-yard loss on Bryce James’ only compleion in the first half.

Kynett did have some success later, but most of that came against Carson’s reserves.

Douglas’ other big weapon, Abreu, was quiet from the line of scrimmage. He didn’t catch a pass and rushed twice for seven yards. One of those carries came out of the Wildcat formation.
