Wilmer Dorris Rau “Smokey” was born December 21, 1925 in Norfolk, Virginia to Wilmer Dorris Rau, Sr and Estelle Petty Rau, passed away October 2, 2014. Smokey attended local schools through the 10th grade before enlisting in the Marine Corp at the age of 17. He participated in four beach heads ending with Iwo Jima as part of the Fourth Marine Division. For his service he was awarded a Bronze Star. After being honorably discharged he relocated to Baltimore, Md. where he married Gladys Masemore and had two children, Carl Wayne Rau and Sheron Rau Gibson. In 1987, he moved to Placerville, Ca. and later married Betty Young-Rau. He purchased his first horse, Michelle’s Mischief “Missy” and they traveled many, many miles together before her death in 2000. For several years Smokey drove the van taking veterans to the VA hospital in Reno, he was a member of the American Legion’s Fallon Chapter. He was pre-deceased by his parents; sister, Margie. He is survived by his wife, Betty; step-son Gene (Sandi) Young all of Fallon; son, Carl and daughter Sher both of Baltimore, MD.; and was also pre-deceased by step-daughter, Cheryl Young Smith of Metter, Ga. At his request, no services will be held and his remains will be spread over the Chesapeake Bay, his favorite Spot in the whole world.
