Lucy Flores

Residence: Las Vegas

Occupation: Assemblywoman representing District 28 and attorney with Maddox, Isaacson, Cisneros LLP

Age: 34

Party: Democrat

Record of Service: Assemblywoman representing District 28; Assistant Majority Whip; Vice-Chair of the Nevada Hispanic Legislative Caucus.

Education: B.A in Political Science, University of Southern California; Juris Doctorate, UNLV Boyd School of Law.

Honors: Dean’s Award, Boyd School of Law, UNLV, 2010; Excellence in Legal Clinics Award, Boyd School of Law, UNLV, 2010; Hubbard Award, Mexican American Alumni Association, USC, 2007.

Platform: Nevadans are looking for a leader who understands the challenges they face day to day, and who will stand on their side as they work to make a better life for themselves and their families. As the daughter of immigrants, I grew up in a challenging community in North Las Vegas. When I was nine years old, my mother left my family, leaving my father to work two and three jobs while I helped raise my younger siblings. I fell in with the wrong crowd and eventually fell through the cracks. But through hard work and the investment of people who believed in me, I turned my life around, obtaining a GED, earning a bachelor’s degree and then working my way through UNLV Law School. Now I represent the community I grew up in, and I know firsthand the difference that investing in people can make. Ensuring that every Nevadan has the opportunity to succeed is what continues to inspire my public service. The people of Nevada deserve an advocate, a community leader, and a creative problem solver. I have demonstrated through my work in the community and in the legislature that I am capable of being that person.

Mark Hutchison

Residence: Las Vegas

Occupation: Lawyer, senior partner at Hutchison & Steffen

Age: 55

Party: Republican

Record of Service: State Senator (SD6) – current chairman, Ethics Commission for the State of Nevada (two years); member, Ethics Commission for the State of Nevada (six years); Special Lead Counsel, State of Nevada in federal healthcare litigation; Scoutmaster and Executive Board, Boy Scouts of America.

Education: Bonanza High School; University of Nevada, Las Vegas, graduated Phi Kappa Phi with business degree, 1987; Brigham Young University Law School, graduated magna cum laude, 1990.

Platform: As a state senator, I worked hard to increase educational opportunities and promote economic development and job growth. As a graduate of public education and the father of six children educated in Nevada public schools, I know the importance of a quality education. I worked with Gov. Sandoval to increase education funding by a record $486 million without raising taxes, and I am committed to making sure that future resources for education go directly to the classroom. As a small business owner who has to meet payroll every two weeks, I know that getting government out of the way of small businesses leads to new jobs and lasting economic growth. As Lieutenant Governor I will continue working hard to diversify Nevada’s economy, create a positive environment for existing companies to expand and new companies to flourish, and to encourage companies to locate to Nevada and invest in our future. As a state senator, I supported eliminating tax burdens for tens of thousands of small businesses to foster economic growth. My knowledge of how businesses operate provides me with a unique insight into how to foster an environment for business owners to create jobs and put Nevadans back to work.
