Nevada lawmakers have advanced a proposal to keep non-citizens off the voter rolls.
The Assembly Legislative Operations and Elections Committee passed AB459 on Thursday in a 6-4 vote.
The bill sets up a process of cross-checking when a person applies for a driver authorization card, which often goes to people who aren’t in the country legally.
The Department of Motor Vehicles would be required to send information about authorization card applicants to the Secretary of State, who would check whether the person is registered to vote.
If the person is registered, the Secretary of State would ask them to prove their eligibility, and they could be removed from the rolls if they don’t.
A similar process would kick in if someone declines to serve as juror over a citizenship issue.
