Local sports roundup: Krebs, Pongasi shine as CHS splits

The Carson High baseball team split its two games at the Las Vegas Tournament on Thursday.

Carson hung on for a 9-7 win against Coquitlan, Canada, before losing 10-0 to Vauxhall, Cananda.

The Senators built a 9-0 lead against Coquitlan by the fourth inning before Coquitlan scored seven runs in the sixth.

Kyle Krebs racked up four RBI on two hits for Carson.. He tripled in the first and singled in the fourth.

Brandon Allen pitched three shutout innings for Carson, strking out three. Cody Azevedo ended up picking up the win after pitching three innings. He allowed all seven runs in the sixth, but just one was earned. Pongasi pitched a scoreless seventh, striking out two to pick up the saven.

Carson went up for good in the first, scoring three runs on a groundout by Allen and a two-run triple by Krebs.

The Senators tacked on another four runs in the second. Connor Pradere scored on a bases loaded walk. That was followed up by Allen’s double, plating Bryce Moyle and Josiah Pongasi.

Carson added two more runs in the fourth. Moyle started the inning with a single. That was followed up by Krebs’ single, scoring Moyle.

Pongasi went 2-for-2 for Carson in its loss to Vauxhall.

Branden Hatley recorded the win for Vauxhall. He pitched four shutout innings. Hatley struck out two, walked one and gave up two hits.

Vauxhallwas sparked by Jordan Dray and Brett Resch, who teamed up for five hits and six RBIs.

Vauxhall didn’t relinquish the lead after scoring three runs in the first when it scored on an RBI double by Resch and a two-run single by Jordan Dray.

Vauxhall, piled on seven more runs in the top of the second. An error scored Ty Scott to get Vauxhall on the board in the inning. That was followed up by Jordan Dray’s single, plating Blake Gallagher.

WNC FALTERS

Zac Willis doubled in two runs in the seventh inning and tripled in two more runs in the eighth as Salt Lake City Community College rallied to an 11-6 Scenic West Athletic Conference baseball victory over Western Nevada College on Thursday at Cate Field in West Jordan.

With four Wildcats supplying at least two hits, WNC staked freshman pitcher Matt Young to a 6-1 lead through six innings.

But the game turned in the top of the seventh when the Wildcats didn’t blow open the game after loading the bases with no one out. Salt Lake fed off the momentum of escaping the top of the seventh unscathed by erupting for four runs in the bottom of the inning. The final two free passes issued by Young started the rally. Reliever Connor Zwetsch was greeted with a two-out, two-run double off the bat of Willis, bringing the Bruins to within 6-3. Zwetsch gave up two more runs by issuing two walks and hitting two Bruins before getting the final out of the inning.

The Salt Lake comeback resumed in the eighth when the first six Bruins reached base against Zwetsch (2-4). After Austin Ovard’s base hit tied the score at 6, Willis followed with his tiebreaking, two-run triple. Salt Lake added three more runs against the Wildcat bullpen to take five-run lead into the final inning.

WNC’s seventh defeat in nine games dropped the Wildcats to 11-10 in SWAC play and 24-17 overall.

Jake Bennett, D.J. Peters, Tim Lichty and Kody Reynolds combined for nine hits, four runs and six RBI to back the five-hit pitching of Young and build a commanding 6-1 lead.

The Wildcats’ offense came to life from the outset against Salt Lake starter Jason Jourdan, who entered the game with a 2.05 earned run average and a 4-1 record.

Bennett, who came into the game hitting .404, finished 3 for 5 with two runs scored and a RBI. Lichty and Reynolds each knocked in two runs.

Young worked 6 2/3 innings, giving up five hits and two earned runs. He walked six and struck out one.

The two teams resume their series today with a doubleheader starting at noon.

SOFTBALL

DOUGLAS 3, MCQUEEN 2

MINDEN — Allison Meyer hit 2-for-3 with RBI base hits in the third and fourth innings and Douglas held on for a 3-2 Northern Division I victory on Thursday afternoon.

Douglas (7-3 conference, 13-7 overall) scored twice in the third inning and added one more run in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead and Kali Sargent pitched a complete game seven-hitter to close out the win against McQueen (2-7, 6-14).

A total of three runs have separated the Tigers and Lancers in two conference games.

Douglas won its season opener at McQueen, 8-6 in eight innings on March 5.

“A win is a win,” Douglas coach Rob Parks said. “They’re an improved team — they could sneak up and get somebody in the (region) tournament — so it was important to get this one. It doesn’t get any easier, either, because Reno is going to be tough on Saturday.”

Douglas hosts Reno for an 11 a.m. conference doubleheader on Saturday.

Sargent and McQueen’s Jalyn Walker were locked up in a scoreless duel when Douglas jumped out on top in the third. Freshman Mackenzie Brixey led off with a first-pitch double off the top of the left field fence, then after advancing on a Shaena Robinson sacrifice bunt, Meyer followed with an RBI double into the left-center field gap. Kylie Swan laced a line drive down the left field line for a two-out single that brought Meyer home to make it 2-0.

Douglas scored again in the fourth when Robinson hit a two-out double to center field and scored on Meyer’s single into short right field.

McQueen got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning when Emily Mitchell singled and scored on a two-out error. Sargent escaped further damage when she retired the side on a strikeout.

Walker slammed a one-out home run over the left field fence to cut the deficit to 3-2 in the sixth. The Lancers threatened again in the seventh when Sadaria McAlister slapped a leadoff single to center field and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. McAlister, the Northern Division I Offensive Player of the Year in 2014, was thrown out attempting to steal third base on a throw from freshman catcher Chloie Pratt to complete a game-ending double play.

Makayla Shaver also hit 2-for-3 to join Meyer in leading the Tigers’ seven-hit attack.

Sargent finished with eight strikeouts and one walk.
