Carson City Library looking for new board member

The Carson City Library Board of Trustees is seeking a new member for its board to replace Elizabeth Abarca-Angel.

Library Director Sena Loyd said applicants should be committed to the services the library has to offer.

“Leadership as a Carson City Library trustee requires people who believe that the public library is essential to Carson City’s quality of life,” she said. “These are leaders who are willing to defend the community’s right to robust library materials, services and programs. They have a fundamental belief that public library services promote access to lifelong learning, enjoyment and civic engagement.”

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and registered to vote in Carson City. Trustees are volunteers who serve without compensation and should expect to work about six to eight hours per month.

Duties will include working with the Carson City Board of Supervisors to obtain funding, development and approval of library policies, hire and supervise the library director and act as an advocate for the library.

“Library trustees must have the demonstrated ability to approach people and problems with an open mind,” Loyd said. “They should have the courage to resist pressures which interfere with the community’s democratic right to public library services, places and spaces.”

Applications must be submitted to the Carson City executive offices in City Hall, 201 N. Carson St., by April 9.

Carson City Supervisors will interview for the position during the April 16 meeting.
