SAN DIEGO – The Nevada baseball team vaulted to first place in Mountain West standings Saturday afternoon, defeating San Diego State by an 8-5 margin at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
The Pack scored eight runs on eight hits to clinch the series victory while improving to 30-9 overall and 15-5 in league play. With two straight wins over the Aztecs, the Wolf Pack now holds a one-game advantage in the conference standings entering today’s series finale. Nevada also became the second fastest team in program history to reach the 30-win plateau while matching last year’s conference win total with nine MW games remaining.
Senior RHP Jason Dietrich started on the mound, improving to 5-2 with another consistent performance. The 6-foot-6 righty pitched 6.1 innings without walking a batter, limiting the Aztecs to three runs on six hits. Deitrich leads the Pack in victories the season.
Junior RHP Adam Whitt earned the final seven outs to collect his 13th save of the season. The Carson City native matches Matt Gardner’s 2012 program record for saves in a season, and now trails the program record for career saves by three. Whitt allowed two hits while striking out three in the final 2.1 frames.
The series finale between the Wolf Pack and Aztecs is set for 1 p.m. today. With a win, Nevada would secure its sixth series sweep of the season. Today’s game will be streamed live on the MW Network.
