Bighorns tally trio of wins

The Oasis Bighorns scored a trio of wins last week to the open the season.

On Thursday the Bighorns under-13 boys scored a road victory over the Mount Rose Rattlers. Midfielder Zane Davis opened the scoring for the Bighorns en route to a hat trick, while midfielder Nico Hofheins also tallied three goals.

Midfielder Nick Springfield also added a goal and rookie attackman Seth Duncan scored in his first game. At the other end, goaltender Damien Billips and defensemen Tanner Stritenberger, Josh Evand and Josh Bloomfield kept the Bighorns in the lead throughout the contest.

On Saturday, the Bighorns boys teams had their home openers, but the U13 boys fell to the North Tahoe Lakers, 9-6. The Bighorns stayed with the Lakers through three quarters powered by another hat trick from Davis. Hofheins added a pair of goals, and midfielder Matthew Catlin scored one.

Goaltender Maximus Swan kept the Bighorns close all game with key saves, but the Lakers pulled away with two unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

In the U15 game, the Bighorns jumped out to an early lead and cruised to 15-0 victory over the Lakers. Midfielder Tristan Rodarte led off the Bighorns scoring and finished the day with two goals.

Fellow midfielder Josh Carter and attackman Trey Rooks each scored four goals, while midfielders Donovan Fermaint, Anthony Lombardo, Thorn and attackmen Luis Orozco and Nick Delgado also found the back of the net. In goal, Brendan Leary secured the shutout.

The Oasis Academy Bighorns girls traveled to Reno on Saturday for their first official league lacrosse game with a 6-3 win against the Reno Wild Fires.

The Wild Fires open with a pair of quick goals off direct shots on goalie Madi Whitaker. This fueled the Bighorns to score two goals — one each from Alanna Muir and Sadie O’Flaherty. Whitaker then saved a goal leaving the first half tied at 2.

Going into the second half, Whitaker moved into an attack role coming right out and scoring a goal, followed by Muir and O’Flaherty giving the Bighorns a 5-2 lead. The Wild Fires closing the gap to 5-3, slipping one past goalie Audrey Rasmussen. Rasmussen then had a save clearing the ball to Savannah Robinson with an assist to Whitaker for the final goal.

Midfielders Jacie Cathey, Kate Dunkin, Maiya Swan, Laura Stark and Brooklyn Whitaker all had several shots on goal with assists from attackers Taryn Barrenchea, Meeka Erwin, Emily Giovanetti and Ellie Williams.

Defenders Jaidyn Delgado, Franny Mori, Emma Robinson, Yamile Stark, Maiya Swan and Rasmussen battled hard to contain the Wild Fires to the restraining line limiting their shots on goal.

The Bighorns return to action on Thursday, as the boys teams are away at Mount Rose. On Saturday, the Bighorns boys host North Reno with the U13 game at 10a.m., U15 at noon, while the Bighorns girls have their first home game this Saturday at 11:15 a.m. against the Reno Wild Fires. Oasis’ home games at the Churchill County Regional Park.
