Common Core

A symposium on Jan. 14 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the Fallon Convention Center will be held for a public discussion on Common Core State Standards.

Participants from the Nevada Department of Education and nationally-known educators Sandra Stotsky and James Milgram will present their views on the program.

Amateur radio

The Amateur Radio of Churchill County (ARCC) invites all current amateur (Ham) radio operators or anyone interested in amateur radio to its monthly meeting, which is on the first Tuesday of the month at the Churchill County Administrative Complex, conference room 102, 155 N. Taylor St.

Amateur radio operators are invited to attend a weekly NET on Sundays at 6 p.m. at repeater 146.97 with a PL of 103.5 Hz The purpose of this net is to exchange information relating to general amateur radio topics.

All current amateur (HAM) radio operators or anyone interested in getting their amateur (HAM) radio license come to our bi-monthly Volunteer Examination (Testing) Session, held on the third Saturday of every other month.

Flu vaccine is being offered in the local pharmacies, private doctors and the Community Health Nurse.

FAWG fundraiser

The Velvet Rose Dog Salon, 4629 Reno Highway, will host a dog wash to benefit Fallon Animal Welfare Group on Jan. 11 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Training workshop

A training-of-trainers workshop is designed to educate adults who work with teens and teen peer leaders/educators about healthy dating relationships and the prevention of relationship abuse.

This one-day training will prepare participants to present this information based on educational materials that are appropriate for teen audiences ranging in age 14-17 and young adults 18-24.

Churchill Democrats meeting

The Churchill County Democrats will hold their regular monthly meeting on Jan. 8 at the Churchill County Administration Complex on the corner of North Taylor and A streets in Room 136.

They will be nominating members for the election of CCDCC officers in February. The meeting starts at 6 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to attend.


MOPS meeting

Are you the Mother of a Preschooler, birth to 5 yrs.? Do you need a break a couple of times a month?

We hope at our meetings moms will find encouragement, support, relevant teaching, and opportunities to develop relationships with other women who are in the same stage of life. Bereavement Support Group

Fernley Republican Women

The Fernley Republican Women (FRW) will hold its next meeting at the Fernley High School Library, 1300 Highway 95A, on Jan. 20.

A light meal will be served at 6 p.m. and the meeting will start promptly at 6:30 p.m. The guest speaker will be John Tyson, communications specialist for Comstock Mining, who will speak on his experiences covering rural Nevada as a reporter. Also, having spent 25 years in the newsroom, he will present ideas on how Republicans can challenge the biased reporting of the liberal press. The public is always invited to attend.

Lyon County Republicans

The Lyon County Republican Central Committee will hold its next meeting on Jan. 10 at the Utilities Building, 34 Lakes Boulevard, Dayton.

The meeting will begin promptly at 10 a.m. The LCRCC will be electing new officers for 2015-16 as well as our representatives to the Nevada Republican Central Committee.

Community Service Thrift Shop

The Community Service Thrift Shop at 169 E. Center Street is open 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. each weekday.

We are a non-profit organization run by a group of dedicated community volunteers. We do not have room for bicycles, beds, couches or large televisions. We receive donations at the back door from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. weekdays.

We have received lots of material (priced at $1 a yard) and lots of Lace trim’ priced as marked, that is for sale.

January 5-9; Storewide half-price!

The Blue Sky Thrift Store (formerly Fallon Humboldt Shredders) is located at 290 S. Maine St. Hours are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Bagged clothing sales, $4 per plastic shopping bag full of clothing available on Saturdays.

Stuf ’n Such Thrift Store

The Stuf ‘n Such Thrift Store, owned and operated by Banner Churchill Community Hospital Auxiliary, is open Tuesday-Saturday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., 99 S. Nevada St., 775-423-6446. Donations are accepted Tuesday-Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Child support enforcement

Child support enforcement services are available through the Churchill County District Attorney’s office.

The staff may be able to help establish parentage and help obtain a child support order to include medical support. Pick up an application at the Churchill County Child Support Office at 165 N. Ada St., or visit www.churchillcounty.org and follow the links to the District Attorney’s Child Support Division.

Volunteers needed for tax preparation

Churchill County Social Services will be participating in the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) Program for the 2014 Tax Season.

e are looking for volunteers to assist with income tax preparation. Individuals don’t have to have several years of experience in preparing income taxes but should enjoy working with the public. Training will be provided and volunteers who complete the tax season will be paid a stipend.
