Churchill Arts will present a performance by three heralded Jazz musicians in the Barkley Theatre on Jan. 31.

The concert will bring together pianist Lynne Arriale, saxophonist and vocalist Grace Kelly, and vocalist Carla Cook in a show entitled “You Know How I Feel.” The performance celebrates the music of some of their main sources of artistic inspiration — Nina Simone, Joni Mitchell and Abby Lincoln.

They will share their unique re-interpretations of these iconic singers and their popular classic songs in an evening of unparalleled empathetic collaboration

Each artist will also contribute original compositions to the evening’s music, to honor music that has influenced their own individual artistic vision. Joining the trio will be Ross Pederson on drums and Evan Gregor on bass.

Lynne and Grace have toured together extensively including appearances at the San Javier International Jazz Festival in Spain, the Umea Festival in Sweden, the CRC Concert Hall in Istanbul and JazzFest Gottingen in Germany.

Joining them for the West Coast tour of “you Know How I Feel” will be the Grammy-nominated singer, Carla Cook who will add touches of R & B, Motown, Blues as well as European Classical to the mix.

“Jazz Times” called Arriale one of “jazzdom’s most intensely unique voices” and also noted that Cook is a “jazz diva with a gospel soul and big band heart.” Grace Kelly was named as Alto Saxophone Rising Star in the Downbeat Critic’s Poll for five consecutive years, 2009-2013.

So it promises to be a great musical evening and the artists will also hold an informal, and free to the public conversation on their music and influences at 3 p.m. on Jan. 31 in the Center’s Art Bar.

Tickets are now on sale — $17 for CAC members, $20 for non-members—and can be picked up at Jeff’s Copy Express, ITT @ NAS Fallon or by calling Churchill Arts at 775-423-1440.

We’ll have additional information on the musical backgrounds of Arriale, Cook and Kelly in the next couple of weeks.
