Verl Kately Means

In the early morning hours of January 2, 2015 Verl passed away, peacefully of natural causes, while residing at the Mountain View Health and Rehabilitation Center in Carson City, NV. He was 100 years old. Verl was born on November 8, 1914 in Joplin, Missouri, one of three children born to Howard and Janie May Means. Verl left Missouri at the age of 18 and traveled west arriving in San Francisco, CA in 1932 where, at the height of the depression he took any work he could find, including the loading and offloading of ships. Eventually, he found full time work and years later, Verl was fond of telling how he worked, amongst other jobs, as part of a crew building the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge’s San Francisco cable anchorage. In 1933 Verl married Linda Fotano in Alameda County, CA and the couple operated a successful interior decorating business in Alameda, CA. Eventually, Verl and Linda retired to Nevada where they bought a ranch in Yerrington and Verl raised alfalfa. After a number of years there, they sold the ranch and moved to Gardnerville, NV where Verl built a home on Foothill Road. Since Linda’s untimely passing in 1994, Verl has resided in Diamond Springs, CA, Gardnerville, Dayton and Carson City, NV. Verl was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Linda and his brother Vernon and is survived by his sons Donald V. Means of Bend, OR and Glenn A. Means of Redmond, OR, his sister Faye Crockett of Huntington Beach, CA and their children. Funeral services for Verl will be held on Friday, January 9, 2015 at FitzHenry’s Funeral Home - 3945 Fairview Drive, Carson City, NV. Viewing will be at 10:00AM with the service following at 11:00AM. Verl will be buried with his wife in Lone Mountain Cemetery in Carson City immediately after the services.
