Wanting ‘Moore’ out of life

STATELINE — Chuck Moore is no stranger to volunteering.

Two days a week, the 69-year-old retired software consultant from Minden, volunteers for the citizen patrol through the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department. Throw in some volunteer time at his church, and you have a pretty busy guy.

And, now he can add the American Century Championship to his volunteer list. Moore is one of hundreds donating time during this week to help at the 26th annual event at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course.

“I came last year and was talking with an official and I asked him if they took volunteers,” said Moore, who will be stationed at No. 9 this week. “I went over and signed up that day. I volunteered to do all six days. Talk to me on Sunday and see if I’m still standing.”

Moore said it was his experience at last year’s tournament that prompted him to get involved, and after his first day on the job, he’s happy with his decision.

“Everybody I met last year was really nice,” Moore said. “They were very pleasant. When they tell you thank you, it makes you feel good.

“This is a homey kind of tournament. It seems like small town stuff. It’s a fun environment. You can have fun out here. Isn’t that what South Shore is all about?”

Moore said ex-Green Bay receiver Sterling Sharpe thanked him for volunteering, and he talked briefly with actor Dennis Haysbert, who has starred in 24 and also is the AllState insurance spokesman.

“I told him (Haysbert) that I enjoyed 24 and that I even enjoy the AllState commercials,” Moore said.

“He just laughed.”

Moore said he will be part of a tournament experiment. The ACC is going to try computerized scoring during the pro-am, and if it works well enough, Moore said that it could be used in the 2016 tournament.

Moore considers himself a part-time golfer.

“I always tell people I own my own clubs, and if that makes me a golfer I am,” the Minden resident said. “I’m probably a 90s player.

“I probably play a couple of times a month. Now that I’m playing more racquetball, I don’t play as much golf.”

Has Moore thought about maybe volunteering next year for the PGA event at Montreux?

“It has crossed my mind,” he said.

“Reno seems so far from Minden. The PGA sounds so big.”
