Swimmers nab 11 regional times

Two wins, seven regional qualifiers in 11 events is not a bad way to start the season.

The Fallon boys swimmers took down Sparks, 132-15, while the Lady Wave raced past the Railroaders, 151-41, on Saturday in Fernley.

Nick Amerson, Kyle Grimes, Christian Nemeth, Nathan Narag, Katrina Ward, Kaelehn Nemeth and Amber Revels each qualified for the regional meet.

Amerson qualified in the 100-yard freestyle and 100 breaststroke after he placed fourth in the 100 free (1 minute, 4.13 seconds) and third in the breast (1:24.63). Grimes, meanwhile, picked up where left off from last season as the senior took first in the 100 free crushing the field by more than 6 seconds. The senior came in with a mark of 54.07. He also took first in the 50 free with a mark of 23.73.

Christian Nemeth’s mark of 2:45.97 in the 200 individual medley was enough to qualify, while Narag made the cut with a time of 2:30.79 in the 200 free.

As for the Lady Wave, Ward was solid in the 100 butterfly with a first-place finish at 1:17.69, while Revels took second (1:19.87) as both earned a regional berth.

Kaelehn Nemeth, meanwhile, also joined her teammates in qualification with a first-place swims in the 50 (30.14) and 100 free (1:08.18).

Teammate Sierra Bivens just missed the cut in the 100 free as she placed second with a time of 1:10.93.

In the relays, the Lady Wave swept the three events against Sparks. The 200-yard medley relay team of Josey Moore, Danielle Brown, Ward and Nemeth took first with a time of 2:23.66.

The 200 free relay squad of Moore, Brown, Bivens and Nemeth came in at 2:32.9, while the 400 free relay team of Moore, Ward, Revels and Bivens posted a time of 4:52.8.

The Fallon boys relay teams, meanwhile, also swept Sparks. The 200 medley relay team of Grimes, Amerson, Christian Nemeth and Narag placed first with a mark of 2:03.58.

The 200 free relay team of Nemeth, Narag, Louie Mori Jr. and Grimes was first (2:02.59), while the 400 free relay team of Mori, Ryan Ware, Amerson and Isaac Kelsey came in at 4:38.77.

Baseball shows promise

An early season road bump hasn’t dampened the spirits of the Fallon baseball team.

The Greenwave went 0-5 at the Mike Beaman Tournament in Reno last weekend, but the real season begins this week.

Fallon will visit Truckee for a three-game set on Friday and Saturday to kick off the Northern Division I-A slate.

As for the tournament, senior Joe Pyle was unstoppable at the plate as he went 7-for-14 with a double and four RBIs. In addition, Pyle was also solid on the mound as he struck out seven and allowed three hits and four runs in four innings of work.

The Greenwave opened the tournament with a 7-5 loss to defending DI champ Reno. The Wave outhit the Huskies, 10-7, and were led by Marshall Coverston’s two hits and two runs.

In Fallon’s second game, the Wave dropped a nail-biter to McQueen, 12-11.

Pyle, Dalton Frank and Brandon Beeghly each had two RBIs, while Austin Bischoff and Pyle tallied three hits apiece.

Fallon followed up with a 10-4 loss to Wooster, a 7-4 defeat to Elko and a 12-2 loss to Damonte Ranch.

Coverston also had a great opening weekend at the plate as the junior went 6-for-14 at the plate including a triple and scored six runs.
