Volunteers with the Carson City Sheriff’s Office are creating what they hope is a safe haven for private party transactions between individuals.

Volunteer Coordinator Ken Smith said too often, people are fearful of letting strangers come to their homes to buy or sell private party transactions. Many of those sales end up being conducted in parking lots and other places where people don’t feel safe.

“To add to the challenge, law enforcement frequently receives reports of scams that are intended solely on getting the buyer’s money,” he said.

To provide a safe place for such private sales, the sheriff’s volunteers will be on hand at the Carson City Sheriff’s Office, 911 Musser St., on Saturdays between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. beginning March 21.

Smith said no appointments are needed. Just arrange the meeting for the sheriff’s office during that time period on Saturday.

“This service is designed to prevent losses and afford a strong sense of safety,” he said.
