Eagle Scout Projects are often the highlight of a young person’s involvement in the Scouting program.
The rigorous nature of the Eagle Scout Project requires leadership, action and must be a benefit to the community. It is the major step in the completion of Eagle Rank.
The old Rose Creek cabin received a make-over thanks to Eagle Scout candidate Grant Raue, Troop 1776, Fallon. Raue made the choice to renovate the cabin as his first Eagle Project for 2015 which is sponsored by LTC Gibbons and supported by SOC Nevada LLC, contractor for the Hawthorne Army Depot.
The cabin is located on Mt. Grant and sits adjacent to the Rose Creek Reservoir and has been closed for use since Sept. 11, 2001. The Rose Creek Reservoir was built in the 1930s and was one of the Civilian Conservation Corps’ (CCC) most important contributions to the Depot Due to its location more than halfway up the mountainside the construction was completed using horse-drawn equipment and manual labor.
Grant’s project included a complete cleaning inside, installation of a new propane stove, reactivation of other propane appliances, new mattresses for the bunk beds, replacement of broken windows, a complete rebuild of the screened porch and removal of brush and dead trees around the cabin and the expansion of an additional camping area outside the cabin.
It seems fitting that Grant’s Eagle Scout project on Mt. Grant increases opportunities for outdoor recreation in Mineral County. The joint sponsorship of this project (HWAD & SOC) is intended to reopen the cabin and expanded camping area to Scouting Units, Depot employees and the Public in the near future.
