The Nevada Department of Public Safety’s Office of Traffic Safety has issued grant funding to the First Judicial Court Felony DUI program for the 2015-2016 fiscal year.

The DUI program operates out of the Carson City Department of Alternative Sentencing to provide an alternative to prison for felony DUI defendants.

It’s a three- to five-year program that has had 43 graduates in its seven years and goes beyond traditional discipline and deals with felony repeat drunk driving offenders. This program provides long-term, ongoing accountability and rehabilitation in addition to a conviction.

The DUI Court is also working on implementing a second offense misdemeanor DUI court to change behaviors and deter defendants from re-offending.

Regina Baca, DUI case manager for DAS said the DUI Court is looking forward to continuing its support of the missions of the Carson City Department of Alternative Sentencing and the Nevada Department of Public Safety’s Office of Traffic Safety to promote public safety by holding criminal offenders accountable to the community and providing an environment for rehabilitation.
