Hank Monk: The Pioneer stages from California were eight or 10 hours behind their regular time. The drivers, Hank Monk and Prince Lewis, had to turn and steer for Strawberry without a moment’s rest — due to muddy roads and dark nights.

The storm. The heavy snow was an astonisher to Carson people. The big storm knocked all this foolishness out of their heads. The snow was heavy with moisture and dangerous to roofs and awnings. The telegraph wires were broken in all directions, cutting off communication from the outside world. The road to Glenbrook was impassible, as there were several feet of snow in the mountains. The report from Friend’s observatory was 3.11 inches of precipitation.

Washoe City. The home of Mrs. Cronant was totally destroyed by fire. She is an older lady and a widow woman who left a fire in her house while visiting with neighbors. A defective flue started the building on fire and destroyed it, the barn and corral.

Advertisement. “Carson Theater — ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls’ with Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman — in Technicolor.”

Mayflower. After 400 years, the Mayflower is being recreated at Rotherhithe on the Thames, where it began its voyage to America in 1620. Lawmakers and city fathers launched a campaign to raise $7.5 million to build a full-size replica, with plans to sail to America in 1999. The project is called Mayflower III.
