The Carson City School District officially opened its new school based health center Thursday morning.
The health center was built for under serviced students and their families to be able to go to the doctor to receive acute services such as sick visits, sports physicals and preventative health and wellness.
“They are acute treatments so students can get treated and go back to school so that health isn’t the reason why students aren’t in school,” said Superintendent Richard Stokes.
The school district first started plans for the health center in 2012, and partnered with Nevada Health Centers to get the grant money and retrofit an old mobile classroom into the health center.
“It is a great program and great contribution of lots of people,” Stokes said. “It is a great concept to be able to provide service that fits the needs of students and their families to continue to be successful.”
A small ceremony occurred Thursday, with a ribbon cutting and a tour of the facilities. Members of the Carson City School District, school board, and Nevada Health Centers were present to officially open the new building.
“It is a reality come true,” said Paula Guzman, marketing communications coordinator for Nevada Health Centers.
“It is exciting to see the families so excited that this is finally open.”
Stokes, members of the school board and executive officer of Nevada Health Centers Walter Davis all joined to cut the ribbon in front of the health center.
“This is a simple reminder of when vision, hard work, and perseverance come together,” Davis said. “I believe health care can be for all if we all work together and this is an example of that. Healthcare belongs to everybody so we are here to make sure everyone in the community has that.”
The health center has been open since Oct. 12, and has seen more than 20 students so far.
The center is located at 618 W. Musser Street, behind the Professional Development Center and is open Tuesday and Thursday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
