As the curtain will rise on a stage full of tap-dancing feet this May, audiences will applaud Carson City’s version of one of the grandest, most intense celebrations of musical theater released on Broadway.
It’s the quintessential song-and-dance spectacular, “42nd Street.”
The award-winning Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company is presenting the musical on weekends from May 6 through 15 at the Carson City Community Center.
Originally a Warner Brothers film, the musical was reworked to become a Tony Award-winning Broadway spectacular, with back-to-back production numbers that mix elegance, comedy and tap dancing.
“42nd Street” is the story of Peggy Sawyer, a sweet, fresh, unknown in the dance troupe who becomes an overnight star.
Playing Peggy Sawyer is Amanda Marvel. Peggy steps in to replace veteran actress, Dorothy Brock (Catherine Cook). Her talent and sincerity win the heart of director Julian Marsh (Jeff Chamberlin), while being wooed by her leading man, Billy Flynn (Bryce Hartley).
The production is animated with some of Broadway’s greatest hits, including “Lullaby of Broadway,” “We’re in the Money,” “Shuffle off to Buffalo” and, of course, “42nd Street.”
The show is produced and directed by Stephanie Arrigotti, choreographed by Gina Kaskie Davis, and accompanied by a professional orchestra, conducted by Kevin Murphy. This team recently presented Mary Poppins at the Carson City Community Center to 6,550 people from 18 states.
Show times for this family-friendly show are at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays. An additional matinee is planned at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 14.
