Community spotlight: Benefit golf tourney set for Carson Valley GC

Carson Valley Golf Club is hosting the 4th annual Ranchos Fire Rescue Classic Golf Tournament on Sept. 10 at 8:30 a.m.

The format is a four-person scramble, and the $75 entry fee includes green fee, cart, BBQ lunch, on-course refreshments, tee prizes and raffles prizes.

Carson Valley is offering an after-school program every Wednesday. For $10, you get 20 minutes of instruction from PGA pro Rob Harbottle and then nine holes of golf. The sessions go from 3 to 5 p.m. For more information, call 775-265-3181.

Mike Davis shot a net 71 to win Flight A at the recent CVGC men’s event. Marc Prause was second with a 73 and Ken Smitreski was third with an 81.

Charles Poe won Flight B with a 70, one shot ahead of Bruce Sanford and two shots clear of Matt Budjako. John Carey won Flight C with a 68, one shot better than John Pearson and four shots better than Jim Tavernier.

Budjako and Bob Pemberton won closest to the hole honors.

Former Dayton star

scrimmages tonight

RENO — Nevada Wolf Pack volleyball’s annual intrasquad game, the Silver and Blue Scrimmage, is set for tonight at 6:30 p.m. in the Virginia Street Gym.

Fans will get a chance to see former Dayton star, Madison Foley, in action. Foley is a sophomore outside hitter.

The yearly game will feature a split squad competing against each other and is the first chance for fans to see the 2016 Wolf Pack volleyball team in action. The team will have a fresh look not only on the uniform side, but also with six freshmen added to the team after the graduation of four key seniors in the 2015 season. While the game is open to the public and will run much like a normal game, the scrimmage offers the team’s most realistic practice before the official start of the season.

Fans are encouraged to attend the scrimmage and no admission will be charged.

Bowler completes Crater Lake ride

Carson City’s Dan Bowler completed Saturday’s Crater Lake Century bike ride in Oregon which covered 103 miles and more than 6,400 feet of climbing. Riders left Fort Klamath at sunrise and climbed 50 miles to reach the rim of Crater Lake. Riders then circled the beautiful blue water before dropping more than 25 miles back to Fort Klamath.

It was Bowler’s 13th ride of the year, which included the Epic Rides Carson Off-Road 50, the Climb to Kaiser’s 155 mile ride, which included 15,000 feet of climbing and all five passes of the Death Ride.
