Prep roundup: CHS young runners shine, Douglas football wins

RENO — Ryland DeSomber’s 10-yard touchdown on first down in overtime Friday night lifted the Douglas Tigers to a 20-14 season opening win against McQueen.

Moments before, Will Williams intercepted a pass to set the stage for the Tigers to pick up their first win at Ken Dalton Field since 1987.

Douglas took a 14-7 lead early in the fourth quarter when Reagan Roberson caught a pass over the middle and powered through two defenders for an 18-yard touchdown.

McQueen’s Derek Stevenson tied the score with an inside 2-yard touchdown run on third-and-goal with 44.8 seconds left in regulation.

Quarterback Hunter Hickey broke up a scoreless tie with 8.5 seconds to go before halftime when he pushed into the end zone from 1 yard out on fourth-and-goal.

Youngsters shine for CHS

GARDNERVILLE — Carson High opened the season with the annual Douglas Class Races at Lampe Park, and the Senators’ best finishes were turned in by freshmen. All races were 2.55 miles.

Mark Ramirez was second in 15:31 and Zachary Sever seventh in 15:34 for the Carson freshman boys. Gabby Lopez ran a 17:32 to finish seventh and Jaidyn Shepard was 16th in 19:09. In both races, Carson didn’t have enough runners to post a team score.

Hunter Rau led the sophomore boys, finishing 25th in 15:58, and Ethan Bayassee was 32nd in 16:22. Sierra Lutheran’s Jared Marchegger was fifth in 14:30 and Dayton’s Jason Logan was ninth in 15:16 and teammate Madsen Evans was 23rd in 15:57. Douglas’ Maya Smith won the sophomore girls meet in 16:11 and teammate Leah Ramsey-Kruse was 10th in 18:04. Sierra Lutheran’s Taylor Davison was 12th in 18:06 and teammate Emily McNeely was 16th in 18:43.

In the junior girls race, Megan Ruffo of Douglas was ninth in 16:55 followed by Josefina Ortiz-Osty of Carson, who was 12th in 17:34. Blanca Sosa of CHS was 22nd in 18:37, while Rheanna Jackson was 27th in 19:02. Chloe Hataway was 37th in 20:08. Andrew Voss of Douglas was ninth in 14:21 to lead locals in the junior race. Teammate Sean Dunkleman was 18th in 15:14. Carson’s Reece Canfield was 30th in 15:48, Jayson Legott was 50th in 16:50, Robert Bush was 54th in 17:26, Jared Cartier was 59th in 17:34 and Richard Jones-Putt was 82nd in 21:12. Dayton’s Austin Duarte was 33rd in 16:04. Sierra Lutheran’s Brandon Hall was 51st in 16:51.

In the senior boys race, Douglas’ John Munyan was third in 13:19 and teammate Bryan Harris was 10th in 14:02. Sierra Lutheran’s Richard McNeely was 11th in 14:20 and Dayton’s J.J. Ply was 12th in 14:20. Carson’s Logan Mead was 32nd in 15:28, while Adam Flaten was 46th in 16:28. Harry Meyer was 57th in 17:17. Jared Logan was 52nd in 16:55. Sierra Lutheran’s Elaina Marchegger was the top senior local finisher, taking ninth in 16:48 and Clare Davison was 14th in 17:51. Makaela Bigley was the top CHS finisher, running an 18:30 to finish 18th. Carson was led by Kathryn Liemandt, who was 37th in 20:37, Jiavanna Fortunato was 43rd in 21:29 and Josie Share was 53rd in 22:25. Maeve Hoerth was 54th and Mackenzie Cartier was 56th.

VOLLEYBALL

Carson goes 3-0 in pool

HENDERSON — Carson High, playing without setter Natalie Anderson, won all three of its pool-play matches in first-day play at the annual Las Vegas Invitational at Green Valley High School.

Carson opened with a 25-2 and 25-7 win over Mojave and followed that up with a 27-25 and 25-17 over Las Vegas.

The Senators concluded the day with a 23-25, 25-18 and 15-11 win over Durango.

Anderson missed the tournament for family reasons, but Abby Pradere filled in nicely with 66 assists, four blocks and 11 aces.

Jaycie Roberts finished with 27 kills, six aces and two blocks; Keelin Pilgrim added 16 kills and six aces; and Dejarrah Navarro added 13. Navarro added 11 blocks. Ku’ulei Haupu had three kills and six aces. Freshman Stephanie Schmidt had four blocks and four kills.

“Durango gave us a good run for our money,” Carson coach Robert Maw said. “We got big nights from Jaycie and Pilgrim, and Dejarrah was unstoppable in the middle. She played really well.”

Carson returns to action today at 9:30 a.m. At press time Maw didn’t know who the opponent would be.

JV FOOTBALL

Galena thumps Carson

RENO — Carson opened its season with a 35-17 loss to the Grizzlies.

Colton Schafer and Chance Smith combined for more than 300 yards rushing and two scores thanks to the line play of Cole Ashton, Carl Cavner, Garrett Clampitt, Jon Acosta and Clayton Greene.
